Your cover letter sends an
initial impression to your potential employer. Some people spend a lot of time on their
resume, then quickly "dash off" a generic letter with overly formal language.
NO!
Cover letters need to be brief, yet specific. They should be
easy to skim and should make the person eager to read your resume. Other tips:
- High quality paper and laser printed
- Addressed to an individual, not "Sir or Madam"
- Free of mistakes
- Must mention the specific job you are applying for
- Includes information not found in the resume
- Tells them you can solve their problems
- Short
- Closes with your intention to follow up

WANT AD
COVER LETTERS
When responding to a want ad,
it is even more important to be brief.
Each letter must be customized to answer the question:
"Does this person meet the qualifications we listed?" A "YES"
answer means you may be considered for an interview. A "NO" or "CAN'T
TELL" answer means that you will likely end up in the trash can.
