Resume styles, format and colors have changed over the last
several years. No matter what you are told, there is no "right" resume out
there. However, guidelines do exist.
- Achievements--you didn't just show up to drink coffee in
meetings!
- History--it is clear in a glance what your employment history
is!
- Professionalism-- you "know" it is
2002 and
computers exist!
- High Standards--no typos, clear and consistent format!
- Quick to Read--10-15 seconds should be enough!
Scannable Resumes
Do you know exactly what a company is doing with your resume
when you mail it to them? Today, the answer is that they often "scan" it into a
computer. The computer translates the copy (hopefully!) into a word processing document.
The computer then does a search for "keywords" for a job opening.
If your resume has most of the words...then you get
selected. If it doesn't, or if the computer has "misread" your resume, you get
"screened out" by the computer. Your resume must be specially formatted to
improve the odds of it being correctly read by the scanner. Frankly Speaking suggests you
have both a "Human" (highly formatted) and "Computer" (no formatting)
resume. Then ASK "Would you like the scannable or the regular version?"
before sending it!
